Recycled paper for display

I recently had the opportunity to work with an artist to make recycled paper for display as part of an art installation that is currently being shown at la Villette as part of the Afrique Captitales exhibition. Here are some photos, as well as a short description of the project and how it was completed.

Récemment, j’ai eu l’opportunité de travailler avec un artiste pour faire du papier recyclé pour exposer dans une installation d’art dans l’exposition Afrique Captitales, à la Villette. Voici quelques photos du projet, ainsi qu’une petite description de comment il a été réalisé.

Artist Poku Cheremeh approached me to help him with part of his installation POKOJ, which is a reproduction of a student’s room made from dried foods and other everyday items : a night stand covered with with chewed gum, a curtain made from hair, a stool covered in Carambar caramel, and walls made from dried WASA crackers.

L’artiste Poku Cheremeh m’a sollicitée pour que je l’aide avec une partie de son installation POKOJ, une reproduction d’une chambre d’étudiante, créée avec des aliments et d’autres objets du quotidien : un table de nuit couvert de chewing gum, un rideaux en cheveux, un tabouret recouvert de Carambar, et des murs en biscottes WASA.

My role in the project was to make an exterior façade for the room out of the packaging from the products used to create the interior, as well as personal documents of Poku’s.

La tache que Poku m’a accordée était de créer une façade extérieur pour la chambre à partir des emballages des produits utilisé pour construire l’intérieur, ainsi que des documents personnels de Poku.

We worked together to make a paper making frame at the correct panel size, do some tests with the different materials and try out different techniques for hanging the completed paper façade. I eventually made over 200 sheets of paper using recycled documents, sugar packets (which had been used to ‘glue’ the cracker walls together) and the WASA packaging from the cracker walls.

Nous avons travaillé ensemble pour fabriquer un cadre à la bonne taille, pour faire quelques tests avec des différents emballages, et pour tester des différentes méthodes pour suspendre les feuilles de papier. Ensuite, j’ai fabriqué plus de 200 feuilles de papier à partir des documents recyclés, des emballages de sacs de sucre (qui a été utilisé pour coller ensemble les murs en biscottes) et des emballages des biscottes WASA.

The paper was made using the same basic technique as my tutorial for handmade plantable paper. However, to make rectangular sheets of the correct size I made wooden frames to use as a more solid screen, and added ripped up packaging instead of flower seeds as I made each sheet of paper.

Dans les grandes lignes, le papier est fabriqué avec la même technique que dans mon tutoriel pour faire du papier qui pousse. Par contre, pour faire des feuilles bien rectangulaires, et à la bonne taille, nous avons construit deux cadres en bois pour servir de tamis. J’ai aussi ajouté des morceaux déchirés des emballages WASA après la création de chaque feuille, plutôt que des graines de fleurs.

Finding the correct method to hand the paper was another big challenge. In the end I used two methods to hang the façades. One using eyelets to make sturdy holes in each sheet from which to hang and clip them together. The other method involved sewing each vertical section to two ribbons which were then used to hang the whole section from the top of the wall.

Un des grands défis de ce projet était de trouver comment suspendre les feuilles de papier. Au final, j’ai trouvé deux façons différentes pour les attacher. Pour certains feuilles, j’ai ajouté des œillets pour faire des trous solides dans chaque feuille à partir desquels on pourrait ensuite les attacher ensemble. Pour l’autre méthode, j’ai cousu des feuilles ensemble sur deux rubans pour faire des panneaux verticaux qui ont ensuite été accrochés en haut du mur.

The project is on display at La Villette, as part of the Afriques Capitales exhibition which will be open until the 28th May.
